October Newsletter

Dear Partners,

We have a couple of exciting developments to report with our Investees:
  • Friends of the Children was featured today in the New York Times: “For Children at Risk, Mentors Who Stay
  • Based on our recommendation to the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation (EMCF), a national funder of opportunities for low-income youth, invited Adelante Mujeres, our newest Investee, and New Avenues for Youth, a former Investee, to the next round of EMCF’s Keystone Ventures. With a successful proposal, they will join a cohort of 12 – 15 organizations for a three-year program to build their program approaches, improve their evaluation and strengthen their business model. To each organization, EMCF will make grants, typically ranging from $150,000-$200,000, to participating organizations and provide access to a broad array of strategic consulting, evaluation expertise and other supports.
We are also proud to have kicked off our Adelante Mujeres investment this week and offer support and good wishes to our Partner team: Mark Willner, Lead Partner, Donna Edwards, Alan Hencky, Sophia Tzeng, and Mary Willner.

Where are we going? If you only knew how often I ask myself that question and I seem to have infected other Partners with the virus as well. Over the last year, we have been doing a lot of gut checking and vision setting. It’s very exciting and it’s going to take our Partnership to the next level. MORE IMPORTANTLY, it’s going to change the future for thousands of young vulnerable children in our community now and tens of thousands more in the future. IT’S GOING TO CHANGE OUR FUTURE AS A COMMUNITY!

Validation on our 2021 Community Goal from a Federal Reserve economist. Last week, a 10 Partners attended a lunch presentation by Rob Grunewald, a Minnesota-based Federal Reserve economist, speaking on The Economic Case for Investments in Young Children.
