PORTLAND, OR. – June 3, 2011. Paul Speer, Fellows Program Director, is pleased to pre-announce to our Partners that SVPP has placed its next two Partner Fellows. Cheryl Edmonds will be joining the team at Metropolitan Family Service on June 15 in the role of Volunteer Services Fellow and Matt Reimann will be joining the team at New Avenues For Youth on July 1 in the role of Social Enterprise Consultant. Both Cheryl and Matt are former employees of program sponsor Hewlett Packard Company (HP), and join Paul as the second and third Partner Fellows in the Portland metro area.
Cheryl Edmonds is a lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, born in Washington, raised in Eugene, Oregon, and an alumnus of the University of Washington. Cheryl is the proud mom of an aspiring local designer. A renaissance woman of sorts, Cheryl has a background in engineering, marketing, and small business ownership; is an avid gardening, follower of NPR, and an artist. Cheryl’s career included time at Hewlett Packard, IBM, AT&T and the US Air Force specializing in avionics. After retiring from HP, Cheryl became the Executive Director of a nonprofit startup focused on online learning to blind people. Cheryl has been able to match her love of foreign travel with her love of teens by living in Switzerland while working at HP, teaching English as a second language at a university in China, hosting students from Japan, Belgium, Iceland, and Ghana, and learning “some” French, Japanese, and Chinese. Shortly after applying to the Partner Fellows program Cheryl began volunteering time with another SVPP Investee, the Portland Reading Foundation. At some point beyond her new role at MFS Cheryl hopes to build a small green technologies home somewhere in the Portland area.
Matt Reimann’s 18 years with HP included management roles in finance, marketing, and operations. Since leaving HP Matt has done consulting for local Portland business and played a principle role in launching a new non-profit, Life Expanding Adventure Program (LEAP) where he is now the Treasurer. LEAP provides wilderness experiences coupled with mentoring opportunities to rehabilitate, motivate, and inspire individuals and groups who have experienced life challenges. Matt has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University in Salem, OR, and an MBA from Columbia University in New York. Matt and his wife Ruth have three children and live in Portland. He and his family enjoy traveling, the Blazers and Timbers, attending lectures, the local theater, and the great outdoors.
The Partner Fellowship program drives deeper impact in our portfolio of nonprofit Investees and areas of community concern. The program connects retiring or retired business professionals with nonprofit organizations for a paid fellowship to manage a high-impact, high-priority project in the organization. The Fellows program provides an incredible opportunity for SVPP to build on its dual mission of making meaningful impact through capacity building investments in local nonprofits, as well as promoting engaged philanthropy. By leveraging an existing successful model, SVPP maximizes its unique local impact while benefiting from a broader network of operators.
